The waters surrounding the Cuban archipelago are warm with an average annual temperature above 24°C, mild tides and no strong currents. Standing on a large, exuberant and totally virgin coral reef, Cuba is a sunken paradise for those with a passion for diving. With an average horizontal visibility of 30 meters (98 feet), the Cuban waters possess diverse flora and underwater fauna and an absence of aggressive animals. The Cuban seas know of no seasons. All year is a good time to dive in search of attractive and indescribably beautiful seascapes, coral gardens, caves, sponge prairies, shipwrecks with a story to tell, walls, narrow channels, tunnels and many other charms that defy the imagination. Professionally-equipped and staffed dive centers are located throughout the country. Bilingual dive instructors are certified by prestigious international agencies including the American Canadian Underwater Certification (ACUC), the Confederation Mondiale dÁctivites Subaquatiques (CMAS), Scuba Schools International (SSI) and more. NOTE: While we do arrange dive courses in advance in select locations in Cuba, the following information is purely meant to inform and may change without notice. One of the difficulties we have experienced with guaranteeing dive courses in advance in Cuba is the availability of the courses resource materials (books, films) in the language required.
Resort Course - If you've never tried diving before but would like to try your hand at this fabulous sport, a resort course is just what you need to whet your appetite. A professional instructor will take you through the basics of equipment use and functions and then you'll have a scuba session in the pool before taking your first real open water dive accompanied by the instructor in depths of up to 15 meters in the ocean. All this can be done in just one day. Most first timers are so enthused by the experience that they immediately want to take the next level of certifiable course! You can usually opt for more single dives at similar depths while at the same property. If you move to another resort, however, it is obligatory to do the resort course again before attempting another open water dive, but the course is valid for the duration of your stay at any one dive center. Generally, cost for the instruction, pool session and open water dive ranges from $30 - $50 USD. Open Water Training - Becoming open water certified is usually possible with 3 or 4 half days of theoretical instruction followed by a pool session and 4 open water dives accompanied by professional instructors. Upon successful completion of the course, new divers are awarded with their international certification card which will enable them to dive almost anywhere in the world accompanied or unaccompanied by professional instructors. Most licensed divers maintain log books of all their immersions, recording places visited and depths of dives.
