Cuba is an
attractive destination for birdwatchers with its privileged
geographical position at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico, between
the 2 Americas, and crossed by 2 important nearctic bird paths. Cuba
offers the annual possibility of observing roughly 300 species of
migratory birds, besides having the highest index of endemic birds
in the Caribbean with 27 species in total.
In Cuba you can see the smallest bird in the world, the Zunzuncito (Bee hummingbird), the national bird the Tocororo (Cuban Trogon), the Carta Cuba (Cuban Tody) considered a living fossil, the Carpintero Churroso (Fernandina’s flickers), the Ruiseñor (Cuban Solitaire) and local endemic species such as the Ferminia (Zapara wren) and the Cabrerito de la Ciénaga (Zapata Sparrow).
Cuba has 6 World Biosphere Reserves, and a
large part of its territory is protected under different management
categories, attended by highly qualified professionals in the
activity, who also provide guide services to
visitors.
Endemic Birds by Area List
Day 1: Havana
Arrival at the Havana International Airport, welcome and reception at the airport by the staff of Havanatur’s Specialized Tourism Department. Bus transfer to and accommodations at the Hotel Telegrafo.
Day 2: Havana – Las Terrazas - Viñales
Breakfast at Hotel Telegrafo. Departure to the Sierra de Rosario, declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, for a morning of birdwatching in the reserve. Lunch at farmer Goenaga’s house. After lunch, departure to Viñales where we’ll lodge and have dinner at Hotel Rancho San Vicente.
Day 3: Viñales birdwatching
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for a morning of birdwatching in the Viñales Valley, where you will also appreciate the magnificent pincushion hills in all their magnitude, inhabited by flora and fauna typical of karstic rock formations. Lunch at Ranchon San Vicente. Free afternoon to enjoy the massage, mud masks or mineral bath services offered at Rancho San Vicente. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: Viñales – Península de Zapata
After breakfast at the hotel, we´ll depart east to the Zapata Peninsula, declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The Zapata National Park features 18 of the 27 endemic bird species found in Cuba. Lunch at El Canelo restaurant. Accommodation and dinner at Villa Playa Larga located on the beach on Cuba’s Caribbean shore.
Day 5: Península de Zapata birdwatching
Breakfast at Villa Playa Larga and departure for a morning of birdwatching in the Bermejas area. Lunch at Caleta Buena where you can appreciate abundant tropical fish swimming in plain view inside the natural breakwater. After lunch, continuation of birdwatching session. Return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 6: Península de Zapata birdwatching
Breakfast at Playa Larga and departure for a morning of birdwatching in the Las Salinas area. Lunch at the Fish Cave, an area where a 70 metre deep sinkhole acts as a natural aquarium. After lunch, continuation of birdwatching in the surrounding area- Return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 7: Península de Zapata birdwatching
Breakfast in Playa Larga and departure for a morning of birdwatching, this time following the Hatiguanico River. Lunch at La Boca. Return to the hotel for a free afternoon (optional snorkeling or diving available) and dinner. This evening there will be a nocturnal birdwatching session close to the hotel.
Day 8: Península de Zapata – La Belén
Breakfast at Playa Larga and departure to Camagüey city. Lunch at La Campana de Toledo followed by a tour of the historic city. Continue to La Belén ranch for accommodations and dinner.
Day 9: La Belén birdwatching
Breakfast at La Belén. Departure for birdwatching session in the Sierra de Chorrillo (Najasa) area. Return to the hotel for lunch, free afternoon (optional horseback riding available) and dinner.
Day 10: La Belén - Cayo Coco
After breakfast at La Belén, departure to the north shore cays and Cayo Coco. All inclusive accommodation at the 4 star Hotel Tryp Cayo Coco. Lunch and dinner included at the hotel.
Day 11: Cayo Paredón birdwatching
After breakfast at Tryp Cayo Coco, departure for birdwatching session in the
Cayo Paredón area. Return to the hotel for lunch, free afternoon and dinner.
Day 12: Cayo Guillermon birdwatching
After breakfast at Tryp Cayo Coco, departure for birdwatching session in the Cayo Guillermo area. Return to the hotel for lunch, free afternoon and dinner.
Day 13: Cayo Coco – Sancti Spiritus - Havana
After breakfast at Tryp Cayo Coco, departure west to Havana. Lunch enroute at Mesón de la Plaza in Sancti Spíritus before continuing to Havana, where we’ll lodge at Hotel Telegrafo.
Day 14: Havana & Departure
After breakfast at Hotel Telegrafo, departure for a tour of the historic center of the capital. Lunch at El Aljibe in Miramar. Return airport transfer.
